 A case of deafness due to administration of gentamicin is reported.

 A 39 years old man, who had been suffering from chronic renal failure, was given 40 mg of gentamicin intramuscularly twice a day for the period of 5 days the total dosage of 400 mg. After 2 days of the drug administration the patient became aware of a hearing difficulty which gradually increased to become total deafness in both ears.

 The authors conclude that gentamicin hearing loss was resembled the acute deafness due to kanamycin administration in treatment of severe renal failure.

 The literature in similar subjects are reviewed.
