  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A country-wide investigation on the effect of bleomycin in treatment of laryngeal cancer was made by sending a set of questionaire to each ENT specialist. This resulted in response of 209 cases.

Of the 209 cases the agent appeared to be effective in 97 cases. The bleomycin was administered primarily in 42.1% of cases, secondarily in 24.5%.

The possibility of the laryngeal cancers being cured by means of bleomycin alone was exceedingly small. But, the expectation was greater when the agent was administered in combination with irradiation treatment, in which the dosage of the either may be much smaller than when using them alone.

In most cases the favorable effects of bleomycin was shown when 150mg were used. The sooner this effect is shown the higher the degree of curability.

The side effect of bleomycin when administered in combination with irradiation may cause the onset of aphthos and lung involvements. Particularly, with the presence of metastatic cervical cancers there is the danger of hemorrhage.
