米国における側頭骨銀行の概要

THE HIGHLIGHTS ON THE TEMPORAL BONE BANKS ESTABLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES

　Ⅰ．前置き

　外科手術あるいは救急処置に必要な血液をあらかじめ採取保存して用に供する血液銀行，遺言により死者の角膜を採取して眼疾患患者に移植する眼銀行，さらには骨，血管，神経，母乳の各銀行などと身体諸組織を採取保存して患者の治療に応用しようという試みは数多くあり，それぞれに規模や機構は異なるが，実際に運営されて医学的に社会的に大きな役割を果しつつある。

　われわれ耳鼻咽喉科領域における"銀行"のうちもつとも重要なものは耳銀行ear banksもしくは側頭骨銀行temporal bone banksと呼ばれるが，これは上記の諸銀行とはいささか内容の異なるものである。この銀行は採取した材料を直接臨床的に使用して医療に役立てようというものではなくて，側頭骨の病理組織学的研究の目的から作られたのである。

　Recently in the United States, what is called a Temporal Bone Bank, TBB, is being established for the purpose of collecting post mortem the temporal bones of deaf persons for detailed study on the cause of deafness. The TBB program for ear research is being developed as a national project and it is jointly supported by the Deafness Research Foundation of New York and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. The collection of temporal bones is primarily conducted by the Regional TBB Center located in the 4 major metropolises and 41 TBB laboratories scattered throughout the nation under the former's control.
