  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Microscopic studies conducted on the pathological mucous membrane and granulation tissues which were removed at the time of tympanoplasty from the tympanic cavity of the chronic ear revealed 4 types of inflammatory changes namely, 1) infiltrative, 2) transitional, 3) fibrous and 4) allergic. Many cases where postoperative results were unsatisfactory categorically fell into either type 1 or 4. The postoperative recovery was also poor in cases where cysts were found. Investigations were also con ducted on the fate of the transplanted flap in cases where reoperations were necessitated. It was revealed that poor results were produced from the presence of marked inflammatory signs and allergic changes.
