In order to establish the status of the ton-sils as a source of infectious foci and a pro-per indication for surgical removal of the to-nsils, lno and associates attempted to deter-mine the amount of streptolysin antibody by use of streptolysin-o in various cases of ton-sillar involvements.

Such antibodies are found to be high in the group that showed tonsillar infections but, following tosillectomy in this same group that amount showed a definite decrease in all ca-ses within 2-4 weeks postoperatively; the earliest signs of decrease being shown within a few hours after the operation.

The antibody increase is seen in approxi-mately one half the number of cases of chro-nic tonsillitis. That in such cases the possi-bility that they developing into cases with focal infection is great. In cases where ton-sillar hypertrophy appeared to be predomina-ting feature low antibody concentration is fo-und which remained without change either, before or after tonsillectomy. From the sta-ndpoint of focal infection therefore, hypert-rophy alone cannot be regarded as an indica-tion for tonsillectomy.

Where a continued increase of antibody may be found it is highly desirable that this con-ditionbe eradicated in order to avoid the sou-rce of focal infection as well as other tissue reactions.
