Goto and Itakura present data on the state of hearing of ears that had been operated upon by tympano-plasty with changes that may take place in the ensuing months of the postoperative period. Six different types of changes are thusly recognized.

(1) In the first group, a marked hearing improvement is noted in the initial 2 or 3 months of the postoperative period. The hearing then, becoms retarded at 5th or 6th month only to be improved again thereafter towards a permanent recovery.

(2) In the second group, the improvement and the ensuing retardation ocurring in co-rresponding postoperative periods are less pronounced than those of the first but, hea-ring improvement is finally established in the end.

(3) The third group attain hearing impro-vements without the period of retardation.

(4) In the 4th group, improvements are established immediately after the operation.

(5) In the 5th group no improvement is seen.

(6) In the 6th group, hearing improvements may be established as late as six months to one year after the operation.
