Takahashi and Taniguchi made observations on the effects of turning tests performed on patients, suffering from inner ear lesions but whose tympanic membrane to be intact, by effecting a positive pressure in the external canal of one ear and a negative pressure in that of the other ear. With application of positive pressure the duration of nystagmus is shortened in time and which will be more pronounced if the ear so treated be the opposite to which the turn is made. Under such a condition the rate of nystagmus will be increased. No difference was noted in the results by applications of the test to patients affected with spontaneous nystagmus. Where symptoms of vertigo are present before hand the test may aggravate them still further but the relation between vertigo and nystagmus was not established.
