TAKAHASHI AND TANIGUCHI find that, when anormal person is subjected to pressure application to the external ear canal and the position of the head is altered thereafter, this change may cause an establishment of nystag-mus. Nystagmus in individuals with perforated tympanic membrane, when subjected to similar pressure, may be elicited with ease with the head in any position. In about 1/5 of the num-ber of cases examined, when the position of the head is upright, supine or the affected ear down, the direction of nystagmus is towards the opposite side to which the pressure is a-pplied. And in the remaining 1/5 the results are completely reversed. In cases with labyrin-thine lesion nystagmus is elicited when the head is turned to either side and its direction is varied.
