Arai investigates speech hearing in perce-ptive deafness and arrives at following conc-lusions: There appears to be no simple correlation to be existing between the two curves, that of speech articulation and of pure tone audio-gram.

There seems to be a certain type of deafness which is characterized by being very poor in discrimination of speech over and above what may be shown by tests for pure tone threshold and negative recruitment.

Three cases of this latter type of deafness are operated upon by craniotomy ; conditions revealed are thickened arachnoidal membranes: with adhesions and accumulations, of crebros-pinal fluid.

This type of deafness is called by the au-thor, retrolabyrinthine deafness.
