TOMINAGA and INOUYE report a case of rbinosporidiosis and state that it is the first time the disease has ever been reported in the literature of this country. The disease is known to occur in Madras, India endemically but, it is also found in Calcutta, Ceylon, Buenos Aires, Liberia and a few places on the continent of North America. In the present case the patient is an Indian from whose nasal, septal, mucous memebrane rhinopsoridium seeberi was isolated in confirmation of the diagnosis. The fungus rhinopsoridium seeberi is capable of infecting other animals besides man. With infections occurring in man the area of predilection seems to be the nasal mucous membrane but infections in other areas such as buccal mucous membrane, conjunctiva, lacrymal sac, penis and uvula are reported. In the infection the fungus invades the skin through its various layers down to the subcutaneous connective tissues where the vegetation maintains its parasitic existence; thereby, causing the disease to become chronic and the patient to be vulnerable to repeated attacks. The treatment is a complete surgical removal of the affected parts.
