OKU reports a case of an acouired deafness that regained hearing following repeated removal of spinal fluid. A girl, aged 12, with a history of having been affected with scarlet fever at the age 1 year and 4 months that resulted with bilateral chronic otitis media and marked deafness thereafter, is presented suffering from acute left mastoiditis complicated by cerebral involvement. Two operations in a short period of time are performed on the ear. Follow the last operation during a period of 2 weeks a daily spinal puncture is performed. At each of these procedures 30 to 50cc of spinal fluid are removed followed by instillation of 20,000 units of penicillin. However, the removal of the spinal fluid was continued for 30 days. After these treatments, it is revealed that definite improvement of hearing has been established in the nonoperated right ear which had always been deaf. The amount of hearing regained in this ear has not diminished to date, 5 months later.
