KAWASAKI AND NAGATA made X-ray studies of 44 cases of unilateral chronic otitis media by method of exposure described by Sonnenkalb. It was found that the develop-ment of air cells in the temporal bone on the diseased side was exceedingly poor which was strongly contrasted against the normal side which was well developed. Dividing cell deve-lopments in to that of large and small, the proportion which, hereto, have been known has been a slight predominence of the latter types. Present study, however, showed that proportion to be in a reversed oder, 26:18. Basing their opi-nion on such facts the authors feel justified in assuming that the factors which influence poor cell development are not only those that are inherent but also acquired ones that will hinder or stay the normal process of develop-ment. It is also believed that the probabilities are that the air cells may make normal pro-gress of development if the suppressive cause, the inflammatory process which is the ques-tion in point, be removed in time. With these facts in view, in coping with problems of chronic otitis media the authors stress the necessity of operative treatment to be instituted in in-fancy or early childhood.
