NIHO and YOSHIO found by reoperation on 35 cases of simple mastoidectomies which had been performed previously but had failed to recover from such symptoms, as aural discharges, headaches, dizziness and tinitus, the cause of such failures to be air cells which had escaped the notice in the previous operation and epithelial linings which had been formed in them since then. In view of this fact the authors stress, in performing mastoidectomies, the importance of extenterating all possible air cells that may be present which might include among them the cells of the petrous pyramid.
