  • Look Inside

A 46-year-old male patient lost his eyesight suddenly, and he was made a diagnosis of Harada's disease (Chorioiditis diffusa acuta) in the ophthalmolgic clinic of Osaka City University. Four months later, incomplete depigmented macules appeared on the back, loin, back of hands, extensor surface of right arm, etc. At the same time, some patches of incomplete hair loss with depigmentation developed in the occipital region. They resembled alopecia syphilitica in a clinical appearance. In the histolgical findings of a depigm nted area, malaningranules decreased in the epidermis, and enzymatic activity of melanocytes was weakly maintained in the basal layer. Following the treatment withoral administration and eyelotion of corticosteroid hormones, ophthalmologic symptoms were improved, and slight growth of black hairs was found in the patches of hair loss in the occipital region. Some depigmented areas cleared, and new areas developed, as if the depigmented areas were wandering.
