Abstract

The cat's optic nerve consists of three groups of axons, Y, X and W axons, which differ from each other in diameter as well as in conduction velocity. In earlier studies it was thought that X axons project exclusively to the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) whereas W axons exclusively to the superior colliculus and that Y axons project to both. More recent works added new findings that some W cells project to the lamina C of the LGN and that some X cells project to the mid-brain especially to the pretectum.
