Abstract

Quantitative studies (nerve cell counts) on human cerebral cortex were critically reviewed, in relation to changes due to ageing and senile dementia of Alzheimer type. Studies on totalnumber of nerve cells in the whole cerebral cortex, on volumetry of autopsied brains, and its age-related decrease were also quoted, in order to assess the actual volume (atrophy) and the extent of shrinkage due to processing, which comprise essential part of tissue morphometry. Traditional manual counting methods were compared with more modern techniques using computerized image analysers.
