Abstract

Cerebral edema is a relatively common reaction of central nervous system to traumatic, ischemic, hypoxic, toxic or inflammatory injuries. The de-velopment of the edema often determines the prognosis for the disorder. The brain swelling leads a rise of intracranial pressure. This increase, together with the disturbance of the vascular autoregulation (vasoparalysis), decreases the cere-bral blood flow, thereby potentiating the edema due to decrease of oxygen supply. This vicious cycle must be interrupted before the critical per-fusion pressure is reached.
