Abstract

Recent morphological studies on retinal glial cells are summarized together with our findings for the chicken retina. The chief type of retinal glia consisted of Muller cells. This type of glial cells extended across the entire thickness of the retina between the external limiting membrane, which could be compared with the terminal barat the ventricular surface of the brain, and the internal limiting membrane, which could be compared with the pial surface of the brain. Thus, the Muller cells were somewhat similar to the ependymal cells in their position, and also in some of their enzyme-histochemical reactions.
