Abstract

Histogenesis of neuroglia has been a controversial subject since the very beginning of microscopic study on development of the central nervous system (His, 1889; Schaper, 1894).

According to His' germinal cell theory, there are differentiated 2 types of stem cells from the earliest stage of neural tube formation; The germinal cells, specialized neuron producing cells, and the spongioblasts, committed precursors of neuroglia. His' theory was radically criticized by Schaper as early as 1894, and F.C. Sauer (1935) resumed the challenge.
