  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

According to del Rio-Hortega, microglia were cells of mesenchymal origin, which entered brain parenchyma at the perinatal period. They were thought to become macrophages or "rod cells" in altered conditions. Therefore, microglia were regarded as cells of reticuloendothelial system in the brain. This concept, built by silver-impregnated figures, had been supported by many neuropathologists. However, recently, it has been suggested that brain macrophages are derived from circulating mononuclear leukocytes, and now, the nature of the microglia becomes an issue.
