Abstract

Based upon the cytoarchitectonics, histology of the vertebrate central nervous system is divided into two basic patterns: the cortical and the non-cortical structure. In the former, neurons take beautiful laminar arrangement adjacent to the external surface of the brain. Tritiated thymidine autoradiographic studies disclosed that, in the cerebral cortex, the neurons produced during the early stages of embryonic life occupy the deep layer, while those formed during the later stages of development the more superficial layer ("inside-out" pattern).
