Since our initial study on biology of stem cells of the central nervous system 3 decades ago, cyto-genesis of the nervous system has become understood as a phenomenon of clonal proliferation and dif-ferentiation of the matrix cell. At stage I, only matrix cells proliferate to increase their number. At stage II, matrix cells produce neuroblasts besides expanding reproduction of the matrix cells themselves. When the neuroblast production ends, matrix cells are differentiated into ependymoblasts and glioblasts, via the transitional intermediate, ependymoglioblasts (see * in Fig. 1).
