アストロサイトをめぐるグリアの発生と分化

Genesis of glial cells with special reference to differentiation of astrocytes.

はじめに

　中枢神経系の実質を構成しているのはニューロンとグリア細胞である。狭義のグリアに属するのはアストロサイト，オリゴデンドロサイト，ミクログリアの3種であり，細胞の数でいえば，グリア細胞の方がニューロンを遙かに凌駕する。このように多数存在するグリア細胞の機能が重要でないわけがない。グリアの存在の意義についての問題提起はすでに19世紀末からあった。しかし，中枢神経系でグリア細胞の発生と分化が，腫瘍の起始細胞の意味を越えて，生理学的な現象や分子レベルの動態あるいは脳実質障害時の反応性変貌をも含めるかたちで，具体的かつ幅広く研究されるようになってきたのは比較的最近のことである。

Since our initial study on biology of stem cells of the central nervous system 3 decades ago, cyto-genesis of the nervous system has become understood as a phenomenon of clonal proliferation and dif-ferentiation of the matrix cell. At stage I, only matrix cells proliferate to increase their number. At stage II, matrix cells produce neuroblasts besides expanding reproduction of the matrix cells themselves. When the neuroblast production ends, matrix cells are differentiated into ependymoblasts and glioblasts, via the transitional intermediate, ependymoglioblasts (see * in Fig. 1).
