1．はじめに
現在まで調べられている限り，哺乳類のすべての動物種で，睡眠に2種類の時期が区別される。新皮質脳波が徐波パタンを示し，体性ならびに自律性機能の状態が安定したNREM睡眠期と，新皮質脳波が低振幅速波パタンを示し，体性および自律性機能が不安定なREM睡眠期である。
本稿は，まず，覚醒，NREM睡眠，REM睡眠の各行動期における体性運動機能の状態について述べ，ついでこれらの状態を作り出すニューロン機構に関する知見を概観しようとするものである。この領域ではこれまで主としてネコが用いられてきており，本稿でもネコにおいて得られた知見を主に紹介することになる。
Abstract
In this review, motor functions during sleep were described mainly based on the studies in chronically prepared, unanesthetized cats during the natural sleep-waking cycle. The following points were discussed :
