  • Look Inside

The subcortical neurocircuitory involved in the generation of cortical EEG sleep was investigated, particularly the role of the septum and the lateral amygdala in the genesis of EEG slow wave and sleep spindle bursts. Mature female Wistar rats were chronically implanted with stainless steel pipe- and microelectrodes in various brain regions. Thus, cortical EEG and single unit activity or multiple unit discharges were monitored simultaneously in the same animal. The results were as follows.

A correlation was observed between multiunit activity in the lateral amygdala and the EEG sleep spindles.
