Abstract

In phonetics human voices had been studied with sound spectrograph. Human vowels are characterized by the first and the second formant frequency. Each formant in a spectrum of a human vowel consists of several components separated by equal frequency intervals. The spectrums of cat's cries such as "miaowing" and "howling" are very similar to those of human vowels. But the bandwidth of each component for a cat cry is much wider in width than a human vowel. A formant of a cat's cry, therefore, consists of narrow bands of noise spaced at equal frequency intervals.
