Abstract

For echolocation, bats emit strong orientation sounds (biosonar signals). If such sounds directly stimulated their ears, the detection of echoes from targets at short distances would be impaired. Different species of bats have different mechanisms specialized for the attenuation of vocal self-stimulation and the detection of biosonar infor-mation. Different species of bats use different types of orientation sounds.
