細胞内染色法—細胞内染色法による網膜の機能形態学—プロシオンイエロー法を中心に

Functional architecture of the retina studied with intracellular staining technique: With special reference to Procion yellow

　神経生理学の研究において，対象とする神経細胞の形態を知ることはその電気生理学的な諸性質を知ることとともに重要な意義を持っている。とくに神経回路網を解析し，そこで行なわれている情報処理機構を究明して行くさいに，神経細胞の位置，大きさ，樹状突起や軸索の拡がりの形態を知ることはその神経細胞の入出力の空間的分布を明らかにして行くうえできわめて有意義である。ここでは，Procion yellowの開発（StrettonとKravitz，1968）以来とくにポピュラーになった細胞内染色法の概要を紹介し（Procion yellow法についてはすでにKaterとNicholsonによるSymposium Proceedingsがあるので参照されたい），脊椎動物網膜回路網の解析に応用して得られた知見を御紹介したい。

Abstract

Functional organization of the carp retina has been studied by examining receptive fields of various neurons and by morphological observation after intracellular staining either with Procion yellow or with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Axons of off-center bipolar cells were found to terminate in sublamina a (distal half) of the inner plexiform layer (IPL), where dendrites of off-center ganglion cells were also confined. Terminals of on-center bipolar cells were localized at sublamina b (proximal half) of IPL, where dendrites of on-center ganglion cells were confined.
