Abstract

The first mutation described as producing a progressive muscular dystrophy in mouse, called dystrophia muscularis which is transmitted an autosomal recessive gene dy on chromosome 10, occurred spontaneously in a colony of inbred strain 129/Re at the Jackson Laboratory in 1951 (Michelson et al., 1955) and a second allele of these mutation, dystrophia muscularis-2J (dy2J) occurred in strain WK/Re in 1969 (Meier et al., 1970). This inherited myopathy in mouse with characteristic muscle weakness, atrophy and reduced lifespan, provides a useful tool for research in the field of neuromuscular disease.
