Abstract

Electrical stimulation is emerging as a new therapeutic and rehabilitation agent. The purpose of this paper is to review clinical application of so-called functional electrical stimulation assuming restoration of lost functions and alteration of abnormal movements, especially foot drop due to centrally paralised ankle dorsiflexor muscles.

The concept of peroneal nerve stimulation was initially proposed by Liberson (1961). His originalidea was turned into clinical reality by the Ljubljana group, Yugoslavia, culminating in the Ljubljana Functional Electrical Stimulating Brace (using surface electrode).
