  • Look Inside

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was es-tablished as a disease entity by Charcot in his serial lectures on the diseases of the nervous system at Salpetriere Hospital from 1872 to 1874. He picked it up from a group of muscular atrophy which was called "progressive muscular atrophy" by Duchenne de Boulogne (1849). Luys (1860) demonstrated that the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord were degenerated or atrophied in this condition. Since then the concept of "spinal progressive muscular atrophy" (SPMA) was born.
