  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

242 consecutive out-patients of diabetes melli-tus considerably well representing the whole massof the diabetic patients in Japan were offeredfor a detailed neurological examination includinga cerebrospinal fiuid examination in 79.

The figures for the frequencies of the variousmanifestations with a circumspect scrutiny ofthe oblect mass have shown that the frequencyof the disorder in Japan does not greatly differfrom those in America or in the European coun-tries.

The most frequently observed four manifesta-tions, viz. the diminution or absence of the deepreflexes. the disturbance of the vibratory sensa-tioll, the pain, and the paresthesia dysesthesia, have been shown to have different ways of cor-relation to the clinical indices of the five nlainsupposed etiological factors, viz. the age, thelength of the duration of diabetes, the fastingblood suger leve1, the grade of diabetic retino-pathy or albuminuria, and the grade of Keith-Wagener in a fundoscopic examination or ofhypertension, and thus it has been demonstratedthat there are some distinct etiological differencesamong the various manifestations of this disor-der.
