  • Look Inside

Estrogen receptors located in various nuclei of the brain modulate a number of physiological functions. The article describes one of the roles of estrogen feedback actions in modulating the response of reproductive functions to external environmental cues, such as stress. Several types of stress suppress reproductive functions regardless of the presence of estrogen. For instance, immobilization stress suppresses luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion in ovariectomized rats as well as estrogen-treated ovariectomized animals. On the other hand, fasting stress profoundly suppresses LH release only in the presence of estrogen.
