Gonadal steroid hormones (androgen, estrogen, progesterone, etc.) play major roles in the sex-specific brain development and behaviors. We have been studying behavioral characteristics of estrogen receptor-α gene knockout (ERKO) mice, which lack functional ER-α but not ER-β gene expression, to determine the role of ER-α mediated action of gonadal steroid hormones. We found that ER-α gene disruption greatly modified a number of behaviors, such as sexual, aggressive, parental and anxiety levels, and that those effects are sex-specific.
