  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Cl- channels are expressed in a wide variety of cell membranes and play important roles in the formation of resting potential, modulation of membrane excitability, fluid and electrolyte transport, cell volume regulation, and so on. From molecular biological studies, three classes of Cl- channel families have been identified ligand-gated Cl- channels such as GABAA and glycine receptors, C1C family and CFTR Cl- channel. Recently, there has been an upsurge of interest in volume-sensitive Cl-channels which are activated during osmotic swelling and involved in cell volume regulation, though the molecular identity has not been determined.
