  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Voltage-gated Na+ channels play critical roles in initiation and conduction of impulses in neurons. Most of the channel properties reside in alpha-subunits which consist of four homologous repeats (I-IV). Recent molecular biological approaches have had great impact on the structure-function relationship of voltage-gated Na+ channels. The most unique feature of these channels is that Na+ ions can selectively permeate through the pore. High ion selectivity is based on asymetrical alignents of amino acids in the P-region.
