  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Locomotion in adult quadrupedal vertebrates, with the ventral body surface off the floor, was observed after postnatal day (P) 10 in the rat. However, interlimb coordination typical of swimming or trotting was already present even at embryonic day 20 (E20: one day before birth). Therefore, interneuronal circuits capable of producing a sustained rhythmic motor activity for locomotion, central pattern generator (CPG), has been formed at the embryonic stage in the spinal cord of the rat.
