  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) located just dorsal to the optic chiasma is considered to be circadian oscillator of the mammalian species. We have mentioned about functional morphology of this nucleus particularly about vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) containing neurons which are mainly distributed in the ventrolateral portion of the SCN in this review article. VIP-like immunoreactive neuronal perikarya contain well developed cell organellae such as rough endoplasmic reticulum, mito-chondria, Golgi complex as well as dense granules by immunoelectron microscopy.
