  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The suprachiasrnatic nucleus (SON) of the hypothalamus has been firmly established as a site of the circadian pacemaker in mammals. Accumulated evidence includes elimination of circadian rhythms by the SCN lesion persistence of rhythmicity in SCN electrical activities both in vivo hypothalamic island and in vitro slice and restoration of rhythmicity by the SON graft in once arrythmic host animals.

Some neurochemical backgrounds are reviewed in relevance to the ability of the SCN to generate endogenous circadian rhythms.
