  • Look Inside

This review concerns recent studies on the neuropathology of the dentate nucleus (DN) degeneration including so-called grumose degeneration (GD).

The term GD in the DN was first described in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy by Anzil, although the origin of GD was stemmed from Tretiakoff's GD in the substantia nigra, being different from the GD in the DN. Recent studies have shown that 1) In GD, granular materials in the neuropil consist of degenerated unmyelinated fibers containing neurofilaments (Okumura et al. ; 1975), auto-phgosome (Oyanagi; 1981) and deformed lamellar body (Arai; 1989), 2) most of these fibers probably consist of axon terminals of the Purkinje cells. Precise mechanism should be clarified in future.
