Anti-ganglioside antibodies frequently are detected in sera from patients with Guillain-Barrésyndrome(GBS)and the related disorders. Pathogenesis based on molecular mimicry between the antecedent infectious agents and peripheral nerve molecules has been speculated:lipooligosaccharides of Campylobacter jejuni have identical structure with the terminal tetrasaccharide of GM1ganglioside. We established a disease model of axonal GBS by sensitization of rabbits with isolated GM1. Intravenous immunoglobulin accelerated the rate of recovery from the disease in the model rabbits, as have been shown in human GBS. The anti-ganglioside antibodies give useful information on the clinical diagnosis:IgG antibodies against GM1, GM1b, GD1a, and GalNAc-GD1a in axonal GBS;anti-GT1a IgG antibody in pharyngeal-cervical-brachial weakness;anti-GQ1b IgG antibody in Fisher syndrome, Bickerstaff's brainstem encephalitis, and acute ophthalmoparesis.
