  • Look Inside

Ghrelin is a 28-amino-acid acylated peptide isolated from mammalian stomach as an endogenous growth-hormone-releasing peptide. Ghrelin functions not only in growth hormone secretion but also in the regulation of feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. In this review, we describe discovery, structural characteristics, tissue distribution, and physiological functions of ghrelin, as well as the regulation of its expression and secretion and future directions of research.
