Voltage-gated sodium channels are responsible for the initial process of the action potential generated in nerve or muscular cells. Studies of the molecular structure and function of the sodium channels began with report of the cDNA cloning of the electric eel electroplax sodium channel. Subsequently, in the mammals, ten kinds of cDNAs encoding the sodium channels have been cloned. This review primary focuses on the recent view of the molecular mechanisms of sodium channel function and regulation. In addition, we briefly outline our recent studies on Naxsodium channel, which is involved in CNS sodium-level sensing.
