  • Look Inside

Functional diversity of K+channels is critical for defining various firing pattern of neuronal cells. cDNA cloning works in these 15 years have elucidated molecular bases of the functional diversity. MacKinnon's research group reported in 1998 high resolution structure of bacterial K+channel KcsA by X-ray crystal analysis, and uncovered the principle of ion selectivity and permeation. Information on the dynamic structural rearrangement has been also presented by applying cutting-edge technology including electron spin resonance method and fluorescent resonance energy transfer method. In this article we summarize recent achievements of this research field focusing on the functional elements of K+channels.
