  • Look Inside

The infection control relevant to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies WHO Infection Control Guidelines for Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy(TSE)(Geneva, Swizerland, 23-26 March 1999)and The European Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy(ESGE)Guidelines were presented.

As TSE agents exhibit an unusual resistance to conventional chemical and physical decontamination methods, therefore special precautions are indispensable. Central nervous system and eye carry high infectivity titer. Single-use instruments are strongly recommended and the safest method is to discard and destroy them by incineration, but if they are not available, re-usable instruments must be decontaminated according to this WHO guidelines.

The risk of transmission by endoscopy is probably negligible if suitable procedures are followed. However, as pathological prions may be found in lymphatic tissue(particularly tonsils)and the appendix and Peyer's patch of variant Creutzfeld-Jakob disease patients, there is a theoretical risk that biopsy forceps and channel of endoscopes could become contaminated. Therefore a thorough cleaning of the endoscope is a prerequisite for proper disinfection.
