ビタミンB₁₂は医原性要因による欠乏症状が起こりやすいビタミンである。ビタミンB₁₂の推奨摂取量は定められているものの，それを超える大量投与によって生理機能以外の作用もあることが示唆されている。そのため末梢神経障害や筋萎縮性側索硬化症（ALS）に対して超大量ビタミンB₁₂療法が試みられ，神経保護作用を持つ可能性が示唆されている。

Abstract

Vitamin B₁₂(vB₁₂) deficient is regarded as iatrogenic in some cases. Although the recommended oral intake of vB₁₂ has been determined, administration of vB₁₂ exceeding the recommended dose could have multiple pharmacological effects. "Ultra-high dose" vB₁₂ therapy has been used for peripheral neuropathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, suggesting its promising neuroprotective effects.
