A 67-year-old man was referred to our department for a nodular lesion in the left lung. He had been on hemodialysis since bilateral nephrectomy for bilateral renal cell carcinoma(RCC)performed 11 years ago, and two years ago undergone partial lobectomy for a metastasis of RCC in the left lung. Assuming the lung lesion should be metastasis of RCC, injection of three millions international units of a natural interferon-alpha, Sumiferon®, once a week was started. It was discontinued, however, 16 months later because of intolerable fever and fatigue associated with injection. The lesion progressed during three months after discontinuation, thus injection therapy was resumed using a different natural interferon-alpha, OIF®. The alternative interferon was better tolerated and efficacious in reducing the size of metastatic lesion. Meanwhile he lost the general health condition due to arteriosclerosis obliterans and died eight months after initiation of the second injection therapy.(Rinsho Hinyokika 61:749-752, 2007)
