  • Look Inside

Speech discrimination ability in eighty-nine elderly people was evaluated. The relationship between speech discrimination ability and the age or hearing threshold level was studied. The result showed that hearing threshold level had more influence on speech discrimination ability than the age.

As discrimination score of each word was largely distributed, elderly people could easily discriminate some words but easily misheard other words. When elderly people heard one word, a word of some articulation was frequently mispercepted. It was considered that the cause of mishearing con-sisted in not characteristic frequency region but manner of articultion of Japanese.
