  • Look Inside

Trousseau presented his lecture entitled“About the apoplectic form of cerebral congestion and its relation with epilepsy”on January 19, Gaz. méd. série3 16:51-52, 1861. Trousseau was rather perplexed that his apoplectic form of cerebral congestion showed much more incidence than it should properly be. The reasons were twofold. First, the practioners were not well informed about the disease, or they hesitate to attend to the diagnosis of epilepsy which was a socially shameful one for the family of the patient. Second, thus the family has a strong desire that the patient will not be diagnosed as an epilectic, the family tends to call the physicians after grand mal and this leads to the diagnosis of seeming cerebral congestion. Trousseau also introduced Menière's disease. Menière's report is in quite a different atmosphere. His record again introduced his idea very euphemisticaly. He critisized that Trousseau restricted the discussion to that problem and he added only something to the study for epilepsy. Menière concentrated in introducing his idea and attacked the so-called cerebral congestion to be reevaluated. Although the exact intention of Menière is not clear, he cited Itard's article of 1825, where the main thema is the involantary impulse for locomotion. Other portions of the report are both much euphermistic and metaphoric, or man may say either eloquent or literary.
