  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In the second half, Menière first maintained that the hemicrania has much in common with Menière's disease and concluded that the hemicrania also originates from the lesions of semicircular canals. This, however, was ignored at least in 19th century. Menière demonstrated various situations where the vertigo is induced such as the violent introduction of a sharp foreing body into the mesotympanurn, the negative pressure in the mesotympanum, and the catherization of Eustachian canal, they all in common mechachanically affect the labyrinthine fluid. He positively denied the participations of lesions at the cerebellum and its crura. Menière warned the clinicians hastely to treat their patients with conventional methods of some hazardous treatments for so-called cerebral congestion unduly confused with Menière's disease. As the conclusion, Menière reiterated typical symptoms, the lesions of the semicircular canals were determined as the origin of lesions, and the grave hearingloss was the unaviodable termination of this disease with no available and effective treatment.(The use of“Menière's disease in the context might be taken as premature. It was Duplay who named the comlex lesions as“Menière's disease”in 1872.)
